Every summer, in a remote village in Japan, the Festival of Shadows is celebrated, a strange festival during which the inhabitants welcome the wandering souls of the dead who have lost everything, even the memory of their past lives.
Naoko, a dreamy young woman, has been given the task of guiding one of these shadows, a mysterious man haunted by a terrible secret. If she fails to help him before the following summer, the shadow will be lost forever.
As the seasons pass, their feelings grow closer, blurring the line between the world of the living and the dead. But by spending so much time with a ghost, isn't Naoko in danger of missing out on her own life?
