Hidden along country lanes, and in the shadows of old Shinto shrines, are ancient Japanese spirits, foxes, tanuki and other yokai who lie in wait, ready to play tricks on unsuspecting passersby. Cécile and Olivier - newly settled on the shores of the Sea of Japan in Niigata - purchase a special old camera that is supposed to print these spirits on film. In their quest to capture them on camera, they draw a portrait of a Japan in balance between two worlds.

Despite the modernization of the country, the Japanese still take ghost stories very seriously. The stories of yokai and other spirits remain very present and rooted in popular folklore.
